Could be considered a fortunate guy who is born with a silver spoon. At the young age at eighteen, he succeeded his dying elder brother Sun Ce and took over the territories his brother conquer in the southeast. Young and inexperienced, he followed his dying brother's instructions and that is to consult Zhou Yu on external affairs and Zhang Zhao on internal affairs. With the guidance and advice of these two men, Sun Quan managed to strengthen his position in the southeast and began to plan his territorial expansion. He set his sights on the territories of Jingzhou which was then under the control of Liu Biao.An attack was launched against Jiangxia and Xiakou which is guarded by Liu Biao's general Huang Zu. Sun Quan's forces was truimphant. Soon Cao Cao marched southwards with his mighty army and with such a big force pressing southwards, Sun Quan was at a loss of whether to accept Cao Cao's alliance proposal to eliminate Liu Bei or ally with Liu Bei to resist Cao Cao. Advised by Zhou Yu, Sun Quan decided to muster all his forces for a decisive battle with Cao Cao. Both foces opposed each other at on the opposite banks of the Yangtze river at Chibi. The great naval battle resulted in a resounding victory for the East Wu troops. The success of this battle contributed rather significantly to the survival of the Wu Kingdom in later years in which the Wu kingdom managed to defend against Wei's invasion with the Yangtze river line of defense acting as a natural geographical barrier making a large scale amphibious assault difficult.
Invasion attempts into Cao Cao's territories through Hefei were unsuccessful. In fact neither Wu nor Wei could secure a foothold on each other's lands across the Yangtze river for a long time to come. Sun Quan's focus is mainly centered around the entire recovery of Jingzhou from Liu Bei which he finally achieved with an alliance with Cao Cao. Jingzhou fell and Guan Yu was captured. Nonetheless it didn't concur to him that the decision to execute captured Guan Yu would incur the wrath of Liu Bei.
The Wu kingdom was near to being run over if not for Sun Quan's appointment of Lu Xun who took over command of the military at the last moment. Sun Quan was persuaded to ally with Shu once again against Wei by the diplomat Deng Zhi. This alliance with Shu prove lasting till the collapse of Shu by Wei.
Though living in comfort from the time his brother Sun Ce handed over the kingdom to him, Sun Quan led his troops to battle personally initially. However a few near death encounters led him to concentrating on internal affairs from then onwards.

Died in an ambush. Known as the fierce tiger of Jiangdong. Sun Jian carved out a name for himself when he was young???(age)??? through slaying a number of pirates. Appointed as the vanguard of the Alliance army against Dong Zhuo. He was on the verge of achieving the first victory for the Alliance by capturing Fanshui Pass but due to the non-delivery of supplies by Yuan Shu, the credit for capturing the pass slipped through his grasp. The shortage of food caused Sun Jian's troops which were high in morale to take a nose dive.Starving soldiers coupled with low morale, Sun Jian's forces were defeated by Hua Xiong's raid upon his camp at night. Back at the Alliance base camp, Sun Jian confronted Yuan Shu over the non-deliverance of supplies. However Yuan Shu denied any involvement in the matter and made one of his subordinates his scapegoat to appease Sun Jian and Yuan Shao. Following the fall of Hulao Pass and Dong Zhuo's burning of Luoyang, Sun Jian led his contingent of troops into the capital to put out the fires. In the process of extinguishing the fires, one of his men found the imperial jade seal from a woman's body which was dished out of a well. The discovery of the imperial jade seal led Huang Gai to propose that Sun Jian bid farewell to Yuan Shao and head back to Jiangdong to begin making plans.
Sun Jian's intention of keeping the possession of the seal a secret fell through when one of his soldiers reported the discovery to the alliance leader Yuan Shao to get a reward. When Sun Jian arrived to bid goodbye to Yuan Shao the next day, Yuan Shao demanded that Sun Jian hand over the seal over to him for safekeeping. It was mainly through swearing that he did not possess the seal did Sun Jian managed to bluff Yuan Shao. However Yuan Shao wouldn't let the matter rest as he sent a messenger to inform Liu Biao to intercept Sun Jian on his way back and retrieve the seal.
A battle ensued between Sun Jian and Liu Biao's troops in Jingzhou over the possession of the seal. Sun Jian barely escaped back to Jiangdong
